Abstract

Satureja  khuzestanica and satureja rechingeri are two valuable and endemic medicinal species that grow widely in southwest parts of Iran. These species are rich in phenolic compound carvacrol. Therefore have, they considerable biological activities. To find out the effects of climate and region conditions on vegetative yield and essential oil yield of two savory species, an experiment was carried out on the basis of randomized complete block design with three replicates in two locations of Andimeshk (north of Khuzestan province) and Kashkan (west of Lorestan province) in 2012. Fresh and dry yield, essential oil content, plant height, leaf to stem ratio were measured. The results showed that vegetative yields (fresh and dry yields) of both species of savory in Lorestan region (3.87 and 1.68 t.ha-1) were higher than that of Khuzestan (3.19 and 1.3 t.ha-1) and Fresh and dry yields of Satureja khuzestanica (3.8 and 1.59 t.ha-1) in both regions were higher than Satureja rechingeri ( 3.24 and 1.38 t.ha-1). In addition, essential oil content of Satureja rechingeri (4.9 %) in both regions was more than that of satureja khuzestanica(1.8 %). Essential oil content of both savories in Khuzestan region (3.83 %) was more than that of Lorestan region (2.95 %). Plants in Lorestan region also have a high leaf to stem ratio and height. In general, the results showed that the two species have higher fresh and dry yields in the cooler regions (Kashkan) and high percentage of essential oil in warmer areas (Andimeshk) that can be due to different soil and climatic conditions in growing areas.
