English

Introduction
Most soils in Iran are calcareous, characterized by high pH levels that significantly reduce phosphorus availability to plants. In such soils, phosphorus is rapidly absorbed near the root surface, leading to a depletion zone of 0.2-1 mm around the root where phosphorus becomes scarce. A key adaptive response to phosphorus deficiency is the exudation of organic acid anions from plant roots, which enhance phosphorus solubility. Recent evidence indicates that silicon application can significantly increase the secretion of these organic acids by roots. Research has demonstrated a positive correlation between silicon availability and phosphorus mobility within plants. Moreover, exogenous silicon application can improve the activation and release of phosphorus from mineral surfaces in the soil. Given the global scarcity of phosphorus resources, its limited mobility in soil, rising costs, and concerns over excessive usage, it is essential to conduct studies on phosphorus fertilizers aimed at enhancing phosphorus uptake and improving fruit quality in greenhouse crops.
Materials and Methods
The experiment was conducted as a split-plot arrangement based on a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications under greenhouse conditions. The main plot consisted of four levels of phosphorus fertilizer application (0, 7.5, 15 and 30 Kg ha-1). The sub-plot included three levels of foliar-applied silicon aminochelate (0, 2 and 4 ml L-1). chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and total chlorophyll were measured in fully expanded mature leaves using a spectrophotometer. Phosphorus content was determined by the colorimetric method. Throughout the experimental period, strawberry fruits from each treatment were harvested and counted. Individual fruit weight was measured using a digital scale with 0.01 g precision. The total fruit weight per plant was calculated as the cumulative weight of all harvested fruits during the growth cycle. The fruit dry matter percentage was calculated by dividing the dry weight by the fresh weight of the sample multiplied by 100. Fruit length and diameter were measured with calipers and expressed in centimeters. Fruit firmness was measured using a firmness tester. The pH and electrical conductivity (EC) of fruit juice were measured using a pH meter and an EC meter, respectively. Total soluble solids (TSS) content was measured using a handheld refractometer and reported as a percentage.
Results and Discussion
The results indicated that the application of 15 Kg ha-1 of phosphorus combined with 2 ml L-1 of silicon aminochelate resulted in the highest levels of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and total chlorophyll. The maximum whole-plant phosphorus concentration (0.98%) was also obtained under this treatment. According to the mean comparisons, the highest total fruit weight (599 g per plant) was observed with 15 Kg ha-1 phosphorus and 4 ml L-1 silicon aminochelate. This was statistically similar to the treatment with 15 Kg ha-1 phosphorus and 2 ml L-1 of silicon aminochelate. These two treatments led to a 67.62% and 68.33% increase, respectively, in total fruit weight compared to the control treatment (0 kg ha-1 phosphorus and 0 ml L-1 of silicon aminochelate). The highest fruit dry matter percentage (7.38%) was also obtained with 15 Kg ha-1 phosphorus and 2 ml L-1 silicon aminochelate treatment, which was not significantly different from the 4 ml L-1 silicon aminochelate treatment (6.97%) at the same phosphorus level. Numerous studies have shown that foliar application of silicon enhances chlorophyll content and fruit yield. Silicon promotes the secretion of organic acids such as malate and citrate from the roots, facilitating greater phosphorus mobilization and uptake, particularly under phosphorus-deficient conditions.
Conclusion
Based on the findings of this study, the combined application of 2 ml L-1 in silicon aminochelate and 15 Kg ha-1 of phosphorus (as monopotassium phosphate) is recommended to optimize growth, yield and fruit quality in greenhouse-grown strawberries.
